Characterization of Protected Species
The characterization of protected species provides comprehensive information on fauna and flora, enabling you to obtain ministerial authorization or a municipal permit for a project, such as land development, while respecting the natural habitat of species present in the area. A characterization of protected species is therefore necessary in order to properly plan your development and obtain authorization from the MELCCFP and/or a municipal permit.

In urbanization or real estate development projects, characterizing protected species is a complex, multidisciplinary process involving ecological, genetic, and demographic data. It is essential for better understanding these species, assessing the threats they face, and developing effective conservation strategies. By preserving these species, we help maintain biological diversity and ensure the balance of ecosystems, minimizing the impact on natural environments and benefiting both nature and humanity.
Numerous laws and regulations require the protection of certain endangered species. Characterization is necessary to identify these species and implement appropriate protection measures.

PROCESS
Identification and Census (documentary research)
Collection of existing information on the species, such as its geographical distribution, habitat, behavior, ecological needs, etc. In the field, direct observation, fauna or flora surveys, use of techniques such as trapping, telemetry, or analysis of traces (footprints, droppings, etc.) to census and identify individuals or populations.
Ecological Characterization (habitat and range)
Study of the species' preferred habitat, range, and needs in terms of living space and resources. Analysis of threats and pressures to identify factors that threaten the species (hunting, deforestation, pollution, climate change, etc.) in order to assess the risks involved.
Genetic and Demographic Analysis (genetic study)
Analysis of genetic diversity, gene flow between populations, and the consequences for the long-term viability of populations. Population dynamics, i.e., assessment of size, demographic structure, reproduction and mortality rates to understand the overall health of the population.
Assessment of Conservation Status (classification)
Based on the data collected, species can be classified according to international criteria (such as those of the IUCN) into different categories such as “endangered,” “vulnerable,” etc.

INTERPRETATION
OF RESULTS
When developing conservation plans, specific conservation strategies are developed for each species, including protection measures, habitat restoration, or captive breeding programs.
